December Home Maintenance Checklist

Indoor Checklist:

  1. Heating System:

    • Schedule a professional inspection and maintenance of your furnace or heating system.
    • Replace the furnace filter if needed.? Your filter should be changed once a month or every 3 months depending on what type of filter you use and if you have pets or have done renovations.
  2. Windows and Doors:

    • Check for drafts around windows and doors. Seal any gaps with weatherstripping or caulking.? Holding a candle around your windows and doors is a great way to check for drafts.
  3. Fireplace:

    • If you have a fireplace, schedule a chimney sweep and inspection.
    • Stock up on firewood if you use a wood-burning fireplace.  If you have a gas fireplace, you may need to relight the pilot light and check that the blower is working properly. Also, vacuum up any dust bunnies that are behind your fireplace screen.
  4. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

    • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if necessary.  Batteries should be changed at least every 6 months and the detectors at least every 10 years.
  5. Insulation:

    • Check attic insulation and add more if needed to improve energy efficiency.
  6. Plumbing:

    • Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing, especially pipes on outside walls.
    • Check for leaks and fix any issues promptly.
  7. Holiday Decorations:

    • If you're decorating for the holidays, ensure electrical outlets are safe and not overloaded.  Make sure outside decorations are tied down so they can not blow away.

Outdoor Checklist:

  1. Gutters and Downspouts:

    • Clean gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris.
    • Ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation and doesn't freeze up.
  2. Roof:

    • Inspect the roof for damaged shingles or potential leaks. Repair as needed.? Have your neighbours look at your roof from their home and note any damage and you can do the same for them.
  3. Snow Removal Equipment:

    • Check and maintain snow blowers, shovels, and ice melt supplies.
    • Ensure you have a plan for snow removal, whether it's doing it yourself or hiring a service.  Remember that you are responsible to keep the sidewalk around your home free of snow and ice.
  4. Outdoor Faucets:

    • Turn off exterior faucets and drain hoses to prevent freezing.
  5. Deck and Patio:

    • Clean and store outdoor furniture.
    • Check the deck for any loose boards or nails and make repairs.
    • ?Cover furniture or store it away, don't forget the umbrella.
  6. Landscaping:

    • Trim overgrown branches that could be weighed down by snow and ice.
    • Clear the yard of any debris or items that could be damaged by winter weather.
  7. Winterize Lawn Equipment:

    • Clean and store lawn mowers, trimmers, and other equipment.
  8. Emergency Kit:

    • Prepare an emergency kit with essentials in case of power outages or severe weather.  Do it now while you are thinking about it; you know the power will go out.
  9. Winterize AC Units:

    • If you have central air conditioning, cover the outdoor unit to protect it from winter weather.

Remember to adapt this checklist based on your specific needs and the features of your home. Regular maintenance helps ensure a comfortable and safe living environment, especially during the winter months.
